Custom Home Builder Questions: Basement Or No Basement?

While it may seem like a hassle to maintain a basement in your new custom built home, our custom home builder team recommends that you consider a few things before you decide whether or not to build a basement in your new home.

1) Consider safety precautions. With the possibility of tornadoes and severe weather in Indianapolis, it’s a good idea to have a basement handy.

2) Consider the location and the possibility of flood damage in your area. Each home site is different, so make sure you consult your home builder and ask about potential basement flooding. Your home builder will be able to advise you properly so that you can prevent damage. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure when it comes to basements for custom homes.

3) Start with a good foundation. A good custom home builder will be able to plan in advance to ensure that you won’t have major cracks appearing a year after you move in. Even small cracks can turn into big problems if water pressure builds up under the floor and starts trying to squeeze its way in.

4) If you do decide to build a basement, we recommend using a secondary sump pump and/or battery backup pump to help get rid of any water that might flood the basement.

5) Beware of Radon. There is a higher concentration of Radon in the ground in Indiana. In case you were wondering, Radon is a radioactive gas that comes from the soil. Sometimes the presence of Radon will increase in homes that have basements without much ventilation.
