8 Tips To Living With A Kitchen Remodel
If you’ve talked with a friend or family member about your kitchen renovation, they may have scared you into thinking it must be an enormous inconvenience. Don’t worry… it doesn’t have to be that way! Here are some tips we give to our clients that can make all the difference for your renovation project.
-
- Designate a makeshift kitchen space. Many of our clients clear out a bathroom, garage space, laundry room, or utility closet. Pop a card table for a food prep area, coffee maker, and a microwave.
-
- Stowaway kitchen utensils in the attic or in another space out of the way. Save out the essentials, and don’t forget that you won’t be cooking much anyway, so you probably won’t need much.
-
- Cook meals ahead and freeze them. That way, all you have to do is pop meals into the oven and enjoy them in another area of the house. Remember that you may not have access to your oven for part of the remodel, so go in with a clear understanding so you can plan well. If you won’t have access to an oven at all, you can still cook meals and freeze them into servings to make them easy to microwave.
-
- Put your fridge/freezer in the garage. You can keep your frozen meals here, but you’ll also have access to fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as snacks and drinks. Just because your kitchen is under construction doesn’t mean the fridge is off limits.
-
- Think about using paper plates and plasticware. The less you can be in your kitchen, the easier it will be. (We try to be as eco-friendly as possible, but we also know that trying to wash dishes in a bathroom sink is no easy task!)
-
- Think about using mini appliances like toaster ovens, griddles, or panini makers for easy meal prep. Mini fridges can be a great way to access snacks when you don’t want to hike to the garage.
-
- Make it fun! What other time in your life will you have such a good excuse to eat out, grill out, or go on a picnic? If you’ve been planning a visit to the family, now is the time to get out of the house and eat in someone else’s kitchen, if you can.
- MOST IMPORTANTLY: Choose a builder with experience doing kitchen remodels. The last thing you need is an extremely long delay or an ugly budget surprise when you are living with a kitchen remodel.
