Spacious luxury home living room.

An advantage of custom built homes is the ability to create a home that looks exactly the way you want it.

There is no need to tear out all of the intricate Spanish-style tile because it’s just not your style. Have your custom home builder plan with your design style in mind. Are you unsure what your design style is? The list of styles is rather extensive. So, we are going to focus on the following due to their popularity:

  • American Traditional
  • Country
  • Industrial

American Traditional

There are several variations of American Traditional, but there are a few characteristics that define American Traditional design. One of the major characteristics is the use of wood. In particular, homes commonly have wide trim, crown molding, and exposed wooden beams. American Traditional homes also tend to be rather formal. Again, this can be interpreted several different ways, but earlier more traditional design styles had formal fixtures, furniture, and decor. They also incorporated floral and paisley patterns in the form of curtains, wallpaper, rugs, and other textiles. Some more modern interpretations use hints of these patterns by way of a throw pillow or an accent chair.

Country

Just as with American Traditional, Country design varies. Two of the most popular are English and French Country. One of the biggest differences in the two is simply color. French Country tends to incorporate lighter, basic colors (often cream or white) while English design uses more earth tones and darker colors. This style, like American Traditional, is typically formal. However, English is generally a bit more relaxed, which is why it is so commonplace in American homes. Both styles of Country design often use a repeated color or pattern in one room. All of these details come together in rooms with high ceilings and tall windows.

Industrial

The Industrial design style has been a forefront for some time. Where as the first two design styles are formal, industrial is usually much more informal. It’s also typically more rustic. Elements are much more mixed such as concrete, brick, wood, etc. The focus, however, is usually on metal. This is why, often, an Industrial home will have elements such as exposed duct work. Industrial design has been coupled with modern design to create a very intriguing style. Clean lines and open floor plans are the typical setting for Industrial homes.

The great thing about interior design is that you can make it whatever you want!
