1. Invest In High Quality Locks
One step to take to designing a safer custom home is to research and invest in high quality locks for all future openings of your home. This includes doors leading to the outside of the house and into the garage. Also be sure to consider windows on all floors and garage doors. Here are some tips to use:
- Use deadbolts and secure steel doors
- Before building cut back tree limbs that may lead to second story windows and decks
- Make sure there is nothing could potentially block the sensor of your garage door and prevent it from closing
2. Build A Fence With A Locked Gate
A fence limits the entrance and exit plan of intruders. A property gate will eliminate the use of a vehicle and create a barrier, making it more difficult to take valuables. Fences and gates are also great spots to place security cameras to get knowledge of the intruders activity. This addition will add dimension and value to your custom home.
3. Consider A Safe Room In Your Floor Plan
Having a safe room will protect your family in many different situations, not to mention will add tremendous value to your safer custom home. Here are a few examples:
- Burglaries
- Extreme weather- tornadoes, lightning, fires, seismic collapse
- Protects important possessions
- Peace of mind for your family
4. Implement A Security System Right Away
Whether you prefer to use an activated system, monitored system, or even a watch dog, having some sort of security support program is vital to your custom home. Strategically place cameras inside and outside your home and be sure to not give away too much information on which system you are using to the public.
5. Get To Know Your Neighbors
Prior to building, speak to your future neighbors about the safety of the neighborhood and design a game plan for your home. Gain relationships with some key people in the area. Work together to protect each other’s custom home and monitor while on vacations. Report any unusual activity happening while the other person is away from the home.
